Shamash-shuma-ukin

Shamash-shuma-ukin
(reigned ca. 667-648 b.c.)
The Assyrian king of the city of Babylon during the early years of the reign of King Ashurbanipal, ruler of the Assyrian Empire. Their father, Esarhaddon (reigned ca. 680-669 b.c.), had earlier decreed that Ashurbanipal would succeed him on the imperial throne, and Shamash-shuma-ukin would take charge of Babylon. The two brothers did not get along well, however. Ashurbanipal treated his older sibling with disdain, demanding that he swear the same loyalty oath that ordinary Assyrian vassals did. So Shamash-shuma-ukin sought support from the Elamites as well as from some Chaldean (local southern Babylonian) leaders. Eventually a full-fledged civil war ensued, and Ashurban-ipal laid siege to Babylon for two years. Shamash-shuma-ukin died during the final assault in a palace fire that some rumors said he set himself.
